In Year 5, children continue to build upon their skills, knowledge and experiences through exciting and engaging cross-curricular opportunities which embody the core values of R L Hughes: exploring, learning and growing together.
Children further develop their knowledge and understanding of the physical world around them through learning about rain forests, mountains and the Lake District. They continue to deepen their scientific understanding through exploring and talking about ideas, asking their own scientific questions andanalysing relationships. Children advance their historical skills by go back in time to learn about what life would have been like as a child in the Victorian era and in Ancient Greece.
Increased responsibilities for children in Year 5, for example being reading buddies, librarians or digital leaders, allows them opportunities to further develop their social and emotional and citizenship skills. Children continue to access a wide range of extra curricular activities including opportunities to represent the school in sporting competitions and events.
In the spring term of Year 5, children have the opportunity to visit Low Bank Ground and Hinning House two residential centres in the Lake District. This fun-filled, action-packed week long residential experience allows children to explore their own potential and limitations, develop self-reliance and self respect and to take responsibility for themselves and others. For manychildren this will be a first experience away from home, and although it can be emotional time, it is important in enabling the children to develop a range of skills: personal awareness, social awareness, environmental awareness and academic achievement. The children always thoroughly enjoy their week away and arrive back brimming with stories of their adventures and an increase in their self confidence.
As children move into Upper Key Stage Two, through the curriculum andlearning opportunities, we ensure that they continue to develop the skills, knowledge, resilience and personal attributes to enable them to continue to progress as life-long learners.
