At RL Hughes Primary School we truly value the importance of the arts provision to nurture the whole child. We believe it allows each individual to use their imagination to inspire their creativity, take risks and extend their cultural understanding. This will promote enjoyable, memorable learning experiences and develop an individual’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding of the world in which they live. Teaching through the arts can present difficult concepts visually, making them more easy to understand. Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness. We believe that our art curriculum teaches our children many important life skills including creativity, collaboration, confidence, cultural awareness & empathy and critical thinking. Alongside this we strongly believe that the arts can make a powerful contribution to the health and well-being of our children. There are many examples and much evidence of the beneficial impact art can have and this is at the forefront of our minds as we implement our art curriculum.

It is the intent of RL Hughes Primary School for Art to be taught as directed by the national curriculum in all year groups each term through the year group’s topics. Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Key objectives of intent:
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
- Stimulate creativity and imagination to enable children to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings through practical experience in a variety of 2 and 3 dimensional media.
