Design & Technology

"Technology makes possibilities. Design makes solutions." - John Maeda

The world is changing so quickly, maybe never more so, that it is right now! Design and Technology seeks to prepare children to deal with tomorrow’s world. At RL Hughes we encourage our children to become independent, creative, problem solvers. They are given the opportunity to work alone and as part of a team. We want children to think ‘outside of the box’. They need to recognise that there is a need for a piece of technology and then to plan, design, create, adapt, improve and finally to evaluate the effectiveness of their creations. Then they need to look specifically at their design specifications and their target audience when deciding if their creation was effective. We give children the opportunities to explore other people’s designs and technology, to pull them apart and to reflect on the use of the design.  This allows our children to reflect on and evaluate past and present technology, it's uses and impacts and how it changed the world.

 Curriculum Intent

“Design and technology should be the subject where mathematical brainboxes and science whizz kids turn their bright ideas into useful products.”

James Dyson

It is the intent of RL Hughes Primary School for Design Technology to be taught in all year groups each term through the year group’s topics. One of the units each year will focus on food technology.

Key objectives of intent:

  • Products are to be made for a purpose and are to be innovative and to show the children’s individuality.
  • More emphasis to be placed on Cooking and Nutrition.
  • Teaching the importance of making on-going changes and improvements during making stages.
  • Looking into seasonality of ingredients and how they are grown, caught or reared.
  • Researching key events and individual designers in the History of Technology in KS2.

Aims

The national curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise need to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook
