Planning Application

We are excited to let you know that a planning application will soon be submitted for the redevelopment of R L Hughes Primary School. The existing buildings are being replaced and will be demolished once a new building has been built.

The redevelopment of R L Hughes Primary School is funded by the Department for Education as part of the School Rebuilding Programme. Galliford Try has been selected by the Department for Education to design and build the new school.

The proposed redevelopment includes the erection of a new 1 storey building with reconfigured landscaping and increased car parking and cycle parking.

There will be no change to staff and pupil numbers as a result of the development.

The new school building will help to tackle climate change through minimising energy demand and using low carbon and renewable energy solutions.

Please click HERE to view a document that outlines our proposals in more detail ahead of the planning application submission.

Please click HERE to see our summary information flyer.

If you have any comments or queries on the current proposals, please send these to RLhughesprimary.uk@avisonyoung.com by 1st August 2025.

Galliford Try will be submitting the planning application in the coming weeks. Once the application has been submitted, it will be available to view and comment on online via Wigan Council’s online planning portal: https://www.wigan.gov.uk/Resident/Planning-and-Building-Control/Planning/Search-planning-applications.aspx

Subject to receiving planning permission the school redevelopment is planned to commence in early 2026.
